How To Smoke Your Cigar

Now that your cigar is lit, it’s time to enjoy the smoking experience. Unlike cigarettes, cigars are meant to be savored slowly.

  1. Puff, Don’t Inhale – Cigars are not meant to be inhaled. Draw the smoke into your mouth, let it linger for a moment to enjoy the flavours, and then gently exhale. Inhaling can cause dizziness or discomfort due to the high nicotine content.

  2. Pace Yourself – Take slow, steady puffs, about one puff every 30–60 seconds. Smoking too quickly will overheat the tobacco, making the flavour harsh and bitter. Give the cigar time to cool between puffs for an optimal taste.

  3. Let the Ash Build – Unlike cigarettes, cigars don’t require constant ashing. Allow about an inch of ash to build before gently tapping it off into an ashtray. A long ash helps regulate the temperature and ensures a consistent burn. If the ash falls off prematurely, it’s not an issue, but try to avoid tapping too often, as this can disturb the burn.

  4. Savour the Flavour – Different cigars offer unique flavour profiles, ranging from earthy and spicy, to sweet and creamy. Take note of how the flavours change as you smoke. The first third of a cigar is typically milder, the middle third is more developed, and the final third is the most intense.

  5. Recognize When to Stop – A cigar should be enjoyed down to the last third, but you don’t have to smoke it to the very end. If the taste becomes too strong, the cigar starts to feel too hot, or you’re simply satisfied, let it rest in the ashtray and naturally go out. Avoid stubbing out a cigar like a cigarette, as this can produce a strong, unpleasant odour.

By following these steps, you’ll get the most out of your cigar, while preserving its flavours and smooth draw. Enjoy your smoke!
